Conservation Seed (Surplus Seed) Program Notes:

Availability - The NWTF-NY State Chapter requests input from Local Chapter Presidents in NY State annually in late summer/early fall for the following year.  Chapter Presidents may order seed each year for distribution to local chapter members.  As always, there is no guarantee of availability or germination of seed distributed.

Local Chapter Presidents - You are required to request seed through our late summer/early fall survey that is sent out by mail or email.  If a Local Chapter does not return the survey they will not receive seed.

Local Seed Distribution -  Seed distribution at the local level is at the discretion of Local Chapter Presidents.  If you are an NWTF member interested in obtaining seed please contact your local chapter President and request seed.  Again, because seed is requested very early by chapter Presidents there is limited availability and seed may or may not be available for you depending on when you requested seed.  Although the program guidelines indicate that a member may receive a maximum of 5 bags, the amounts available for the local chapter may dictate that members are limited to fewer than that to ensure limited quantities are distributed as equitably as possible.  Because of the rising program costs, Chapter Presidents typically order in the fall of the prior year only what they know they can distribute and receive handling fees for in spring.  If you do not inform the Chapter President of your interest prior to the order being submitted, they will not likely have seed available for you.

Handling Fees - The NWTF-NY State Chapter anticipates a $25 per bag handling fee passed on to Local Chapters again in 2020.  This is below the anticipated $35 per bag cost the NWTF-NY State Chapter actually pays for the seed.  Local Chapters are encouraged to pass that $25 per bag fee on to the chapter members that receive the seed.

Program Guidelines - A maximum of 5 bags of seed per member is allowed.  However, distribution is at the discretion of the Local Chapter Presidents and members may be limited to fewer bags.  Seed must be planted and left standing for wildlife food and cover through winter.  Seed cannot be harvested for any reason.  Those receiving seed must sign a Stewardship Agreement form indicating they understand the conditions of the program.  Additional program conditions are listed on the Stewardship Agreement form that must be adhered to.
